Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of killing her.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme at the High Court in Abuja. It brings a significant legal end to a case that has drawn national attention since Osinachi’s death in April 2022. Initially, her death was believed to be caused by throat cancer, but disturbing claims from her family revealed a darker truth—allegations of long-term domestic abuse.
Osinachi was 42 when she passed away. A celebrated gospel singer, she was known for her powerful voice and devout Christian faith. She gained widespread recognition for her role in the hit gospel song Ekwueme in 2017, which has since attracted over 136 million views on YouTube.
After her death, her husband Peter was arrested. Despite denying the accusations, the court found him guilty of culpable homicide along with 22 other charges. These included physical, emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse, as well as criminal intimidation and cruelty against both Osinachi and their children.
Seventeen witnesses testified during the trial, including two of the couple’s four children. Their testimonies painted a grim picture of life inside the Nwachukwu home, revealing years of suffering and silence. The court concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Though the judge handed down the death sentence, it remains unclear whether it will be carried out, as Nigeria rarely enforces capital punishment. Peter Nwachukwu is still allowed to appeal the verdict.
The case has ignited a widespread discussion on domestic violence in Nigeria, particularly within religious and conservative settings where such abuse often goes unreported.
Osinachi’s story has become a symbol of both inspiration and warning. While she left behind a musical legacy that touched millions, her death highlights the urgent need to protect victims of domestic abuse and ensure their voices are not silenced.
