Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu was arrested by EFCC officers early Tuesday morning at Abuja airport after arriving from London.
Achimugu, a prominent business executive and well-known socialite, was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at about 5:00 am, according to a statement issued by her legal team. The arrest follows a directive from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which ordered her to present herself to the anti-corruption agency.
Her lawyers clarified that Achimugu did not flee the country and had voluntarily returned to Nigeria to honour the court’s instructions. They said she had made her intention to appear before the EFCC clear in legal filings submitted earlier.
Tribune Online had previously reported that Justice Inyang Ekwo had ordered Achimugu to make herself available to the EFCC, which is investigating an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and money laundering linked to her.
While full details of the case have not been made public, the investigation is believed to involve large financial transactions that caught the attention of federal authorities.
Achimugu’s legal team maintains that her return was planned and that she is cooperating with law enforcement as required by law. They also emphasized that she had informed the court through legal documents of her intent to report to the EFCC on Tuesday.
The court, however, also directed that she must appear before it on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to continue proceedings related to the matter.
As the case develops, the EFCC is expected to continue its investigation, with further legal action likely in the coming days.
The arrest of such a high-profile figure has attracted public attention, with many watching to see how the case unfolds. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to following due process and enforcing the law, especially in high-stakes financial crime investigations.
