Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty in Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione appeared in Manhattan federal court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to charges linked to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione faces two counts of stalking and one firearm-related murder charge. He is accused of fatally shooting Thompson in December 2024. During his arraignment, Mangione entered a plea of not guilty to all federal charges brought against him.

The case has drawn national attention given Thompson’s high-profile position as CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest healthcare companies in the United States. Authorities allege that Mangione stalked Thompson before carrying out the fatal shooting, although specific details about their connection or the motive behind the attack have not yet been publicly revealed.

According to court documents, Mangione is charged with murder through the use of a firearm, a serious federal offense that carries severe penalties if he is convicted. In addition to the murder charge, prosecutors also charged him with two counts of stalking, suggesting a pattern of behavior that led up to the fatal incident.

During the court session, federal prosecutors outlined the charges, while Mangione’s defense team entered the plea on his behalf. No trial date has been set yet, and it remains unclear how Mangione intends to defend himself against the allegations.

CBS News’ Katrina Kaufman reported from outside the courtroom, noting that the case has intensified public interest because of Thompson’s leadership role and the violent circumstances surrounding his death.

Authorities continue to investigate the murder, and more information is expected to emerge as the case moves forward. In the meantime, Mangione remains in federal custody as he awaits further court proceedings.

Brian Thompson’s death shocked the healthcare industry and raised serious security concerns for top executives across the country. The court proceedings are being closely watched, with both the healthcare sector and the broader public eager to see how the case develops in the coming months.
