T.D. Jakes Steps Down, Passes Potter’s House Leadership to Family

American pastor T.D. Jakes has announced he is stepping down as senior pastor of the Potter’s House church in Dallas. In an emotional sermon, he revealed that leadership will now pass to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts.

The decision comes just months after the 67-year-old pastor suffered a heart attack while preaching at the church. A week after the health scare, Jakes addressed his congregation remotely, describing his recovery as a miracle. Now, he is preparing the church for a new chapter under the leadership of the next generation.

During his announcement, Jakes emphasized that the transition was not based on family ties alone. He praised Sarah and Touré for deeply understanding the church’s mission, saying they have fully embraced the DNA of the ministry over the years. Jakes urged the congregation to welcome the new leaders with open hearts, stressing the importance of continuity and care for the church community.

“This is legacy,” Jakes said during his sermon. “Not because they’re kin, but because they’re the kind. I cannot afford, especially after November, to risk something happening to me and you be sheep without a shepherd.”

T.D. Jakes founded the Potter’s House in 1996. Over the years, it has grown into a non-denominational, multi-cultural church with more than 30,000 members. The church has expanded its reach across North Dallas, Fort Worth, and even Denver, becoming one of the most influential ministries in the United States.

The announcement marks a significant moment for the Potter’s House congregation, many of whom have looked to Jakes for spiritual leadership for decades. While stepping away from the role of senior pastor, Jakes is expected to remain active in some capacity, continuing to influence the broader faith community.

As Sarah and Touré Roberts take on their new roles, church members are preparing for a future that builds on the strong foundation laid by Bishop T.D. Jakes, while also welcoming fresh leadership to guide them forward.
