Wanga Accepts Mutula's Apology Over HIV/AIDS Remarks in Homa Bay

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has accepted an apology from Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. over comments he made about HIV/AIDS in her county.

The apology came after Governor Mutula’s remarks during the flag-off ceremony of the Makueni youth team heading to the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) games, which are currently being held in Homa Bay. While addressing the youth, Governor Mutula advised them to be cautious during their stay, referring to Homa Bay’s high HIV/AIDS prevalence and commending the county’s openness in addressing the issue.

“Homa Bay is a great county… They are more open about living with HIV/AIDS, and there’s less stigma, even to the point where someone can openly ask for HIV medication to be delivered to them,” he said.

His comments sparked mixed reactions, including concern from Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, who questioned the tone and potential implications of the statement. In response to the backlash, Governor Mutula issued a formal apology to Governor Wanga and the residents of Homa Bay. He clarified that his intention was not to stigmatize the county but to caution the youth.

“I had no intention of victimising or besmirching the people of Homa Bay. I was merely cautioning the youth. I realise that my words on HIV/AIDS in Homa Bay may have led to a misunderstanding. My apologies to my colleague, Gladys Wanga, and the people of Homa Bay,” he said.

Governor Wanga responded with grace, acknowledging the apology in her address to the visiting teams and guests at the KYISA games. “Apology accepted and welcome to the county of endless potential,” she stated.

According to recent data, Homa Bay is among ten counties with the highest HIV infection rates in Kenya. Kisumu leads with 135,550 cases, followed by Homa Bay with 109,786 cases, and Migori with 106,003. Other high-prevalence counties include Siaya, Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mombasa.

The KYISA games, taking place from April 13 to 19, have brought together young athletes from across the country. The event aims to promote national unity and nurture sporting talent through competitions in various disciplines, including football and volleyball.
