Cleophas Malala’s bid to stay on as United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General has suffered a major setback after the High Court upheld his removal from the position.
In a ruling delivered on Monday, the court decided that Malala’s appeal before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) would not continue. "The first respondent’s appeal before the PPDT is hereby terminated and shall not proceed before the tribunal. Any orders previously issued in favour of the respondent are hereby vacated," the court ruled.
This decision effectively ends Malala’s legal efforts to challenge his ouster. It also reinforces the UDA leadership's move to restructure the party's secretariat, which has been ongoing amid internal disputes and realignments.
The court's ruling marks a significant development within UDA, coming at a time when the party is working to strengthen its position ahead of future political contests. Malala’s removal had sparked internal debate, with some members supporting the changes while others questioned the process used to oust him.
By terminating the appeal, the court has closed the door on any immediate legal avenue Malala might have pursued to regain his post. The decision also nullifies any interim orders that may have temporarily favoured him during the tribunal proceedings.
UDA has not yet issued an official statement following the High Court decision, but the ruling is expected to pave the way for a full reorganization of the party's leadership structure without further legal delays. Malala, a former senator and a prominent political figure, had been serving as Secretary-General during a critical period of party consolidation.
Observers now say that this ruling could have broader implications for UDA’s internal stability as the party navigates leadership changes and prepares for upcoming political challenges. Whether Malala will seek other legal options or political avenues remains to be seen, but for now, the court’s decision firmly removes him from the influential role he once held.
