Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, Salasya said his decision followed deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration of Kenya’s current state. He emphasized that his presidential bid is driven by a desire to offer bold, transformative leadership that will focus on industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice.
“After deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration of the state of our nation, I, Hon. Peter Kalerwa Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East Constituency, hereby declare my intention to vie for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election,” Salasya said.
The first-term MP stressed the importance of shifting Kenya’s focus towards manufacturing and industrialization, arguing that this approach would help create sustainable jobs and unlock the country’s potential. He criticized the continued export of Kenyan labor and talent abroad while industries at home collapse and youth unemployment remains high.
“Kenya today stands at a crossroads: we cannot continue exporting our labor and talents abroad while our industries collapse and our youth languish in unemployment. I firmly believe that Kenya must manufacture, innovate, and industrialize to create sustainable jobs and unlock the full potential of our people,” he stated.
Salasya also revealed that he will run under a new political movement, whose name and leadership will be announced later in the year. He described this new movement as one that will represent the dreams and aspirations of a new Kenya where opportunities are available to all citizens, not just a privileged few.
“I will be seeking the presidency under a new political movement, a party whose name and leadership structure will be unveiled later this year,” he added.
Salasya, elected as Mumias East MP in August 2022 under the DAP-K party with 12,140 votes, now joins a growing list of politicians declaring presidential ambitions for 2027. Other notable figures considering or having announced their bids include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Senator Okiya Omtatah, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa. Additionally, former Chief Justice David Maraga and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i are also said to be weighing presidential runs.
