US Vice President JD Vance Begins India Visit for Trade Talks

US Vice President JD Vance began a four-day visit to India on Monday, aiming to boost trade ties amid rising global tariff tensions. His trip marks a renewed effort by Washington and New Delhi to finalize a much-anticipated trade agreement and deepen their economic partnership.

Vance arrived in New Delhi to a ceremonial welcome, which included an honour guard and traditional Indian folk dancers. Described by Indian media as a “semi-private” trip, the Vice President was accompanied by his wife Usha, who has Indian roots, and their children. His visit includes high-level meetings, cultural engagements, and a planned stop in Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

The visit follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington, which helped set the stage for the current negotiations. Talks between the two countries are now focused on reaching the first phase of a trade deal, with India hoping to close it within a 90-day window.

This push for an agreement comes shortly after President Trump paused some punitive tariffs, creating an opening for progress. The US has been escalating tariffs on Chinese imports, prompting retaliation from Beijing, and India is watching the situation closely. The Indian Department of Commerce is studying how the US-China trade war could affect its own economy and is also looking at new possibilities for Indian exporters.

Despite efforts to build a closer relationship, there are still tensions. While Trump has called Modi a “great friend,” he has also criticized India for what he sees as unfair trade practices. Still, both sides appear determined to find common ground and strengthen cooperation.

India's strategic role in the Indo-Pacific region also adds importance to the visit. As a member of the Quad alliance with the US, Japan, and Australia, India plays a key part in regional security and trade dynamics.

Vance’s visit is expected to prepare the way for a possible visit by President Trump later this year for a Quad summit, as both nations work toward deeper ties in trade, defense, and regional stability.
