Mudavadi Calls for Sanctions on Sudan Leaders Obstructing Aid

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on the international community to impose sanctions on leaders of armed groups in Sudan who obstruct humanitarian aid. Speaking at the London-Sudan Conference on April 15, 2025, Mudavadi highlighted the urgent need to address the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, particularly in regions beyond the control of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).

Mudavadi emphasized that the priority should be to resolve the crisis affecting millions of Sudanese people, especially in areas where humanitarian organizations are unable to reach due to ongoing conflict. "We need to begin pressurizing or sanctioning those who continue to obstruct the work of humanitarian agencies," said Mudavadi. He pointed out that Sudan has become the world’s largest internal displacement crisis, with large numbers of people unable to flee to safer areas due to their circumstances.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary described the human cost of the conflict as significant, with civilians facing indiscriminate shootings, bombardments, and widespread abuse, including sexual violence targeting women and girls. Children, he said, are also subjected to severe exploitation and violence. “We are deeply concerned about the plight of displaced populations,” Mudavadi added, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to supporting humanitarian assistance in Sudan.

Mudavadi also pledged that Kenya would continue to play its role in facilitating humanitarian supply logistics for Sudan. He urged the international community to step up coordinated efforts to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people, stressing that regional stability is central to Kenya’s foreign policy.

Highlighting Kenya’s active involvement, Mudavadi noted that the country has hosted key Sudanese stakeholders from both sides of the conflict and other representatives to seek solutions. He revealed that in January 2025, Sudan's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Youssef, visited Nairobi to discuss regional efforts, and in February 2025, a meeting was held in Nairobi with Sudanese political, civilian, and military leaders to find a common path forward.

Mudavadi also addressed reports suggesting Kenya had allowed the formation of a parallel government for Sudan, denying them as inaccurate. He reaffirmed that the meeting in Nairobi focused on dialogue and peace, not on creating any parallel structures.
