Sonko Registers New Party as He Challenges Impeachment

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has formally registered a new political party as he positions himself for the 2027 elections, a move he frames as part of his continued fight against what he views as an unfair impeachment. In announcing the step, Sonko said his decision is tied directly to his long-running efforts to clear his name after his removal from office.

Speaking about his legal battles, Sonko emphasized that a leader should only be blocked from contesting after every possible avenue of appeal has been exhausted. He argued that this did not happen in his case, noting that the Supreme Court handled his matter too hastily. According to him, the recent confirmation by the East African Court of Justice that his impeachment process was unfair strengthened his belief that he was denied a full and fair hearing.

Sonko said the court’s finding supports his claims that the process leading to his ouster did not follow the standards expected for such a serious political decision. He maintains that this outcome gives him moral and legal ground to continue participating in national politics. By launching a new party, he is signaling that he intends to remain active and involved in Kenya’s political landscape despite the challenges associated with his impeachment.

The registration of the party now provides Sonko with a fresh political vehicle as he looks ahead to 2027. He has framed this move not simply as a comeback attempt but as part of a wider effort to demonstrate that leaders should have the opportunity to contest decisions they believe were made unjustly. For him, the broader message is about fairness, due process, and ensuring that political disputes are handled transparently.

Although he did not give additional details on the structure or plans of the new party, the step underscores his intention to stay politically relevant. Sonko’s remarks suggest that he sees the court’s position as an important validation and a basis for re-entering the national arena with renewed confidence.
