Ugandan students have received a major boost after Algeria announced 210 fully-funded scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year.
This development was revealed during a meeting between Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Mourad Amokrane. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala as part of preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX), which will be held from August 20–22, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan.
The scholarships will cover both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in key areas such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, architecture, agronomic sciences, and veterinary medicine. Algeria’s support will include full tuition, accommodation, and a living stipend to enable students to concentrate fully on their academic work.
Ambassador Amokrane said Algeria remains committed to supporting Africa’s transformation through education. “Education is at the heart of Africa’s transformation,” he stated, adding that Algeria is proud to work with Uganda and other African countries to empower young people.
Hon. Oryem welcomed the offer, describing education as a key driver of national development. He thanked Algeria for its generosity and reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to using knowledge as a tool for long-term growth and progress.
Uganda’s Ambassador to Algeria, H.E. John Chrysostom Alintuma Nsambu, has played a key role in deepening education ties between the two nations. His efforts have led to a sharp increase in scholarship numbers—from just 20 annually before his appointment to 210 in 2025. In 2024 alone, Uganda received 200 Algerian scholarships—100 in April and another 100 in October.
Beyond education, the two countries also discussed strengthening trade. Algeria expressed interest in importing Ugandan agricultural products like coffee and milk. Both sides pledged to work closely ahead of TICAD IX to promote African unity and shared prosperity.
The Ministry of Education and Sports has invited qualified Ugandan students to apply for the scholarships through its official portal by September 30, 2025. Applicants must meet academic requirements and show a commitment to contributing to Uganda’s development after their studies.
This initiative marks a new chapter in Uganda-Algeria relations and gives promising Ugandan students access to world-class education abroad.
