Ex-KDF Soldier Charged Over Group Opposing Police Brutality

A former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, Patrick Osoi, has been arraigned in court for allegedly forming an illegal group that he says is meant to fight police brutality in Kenya.

Osoi, who also claims to be a former officer of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and a U.S. Army veteran, is accused of organizing and promoting a movement that authorities believe could pose a threat to national security. In social media posts, Osoi stated that the movement would act as a platform for him to run for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The State believes Osoi’s actions may go beyond free speech and political expression, arguing that he is mobilizing support in a way that contravenes the law. According to court filings, he has been actively recruiting and encouraging followers to challenge state authority, particularly Kenya’s law enforcement agencies, under the banner of fighting police abuse.
