Authorities in Michigan say they plan to pursue terrorism charges after a stabbing attack at a Walmart in Traverse City left 11 people injured. The incident took place on Saturday at around 4:43 p.m. when a 42-year-old man walked into the store armed with a folding knife and began attacking shoppers without warning.
According to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, the victims include five men and six women. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the injured individuals, but they confirmed that emergency services responded quickly and transported the victims to nearby hospitals. The severity of the injuries has not been fully disclosed, though officials have described the incident as a serious and violent assault.
The suspect, whose name has also not yet been made public, was taken into custody at the scene. He did not appear to resist arrest and is currently being held as investigators gather more information about his motive and background. Police are working with state and federal agencies to determine whether the attack was premeditated and if it meets the legal standard for a terrorism charge.
Terrorism charges are typically brought in cases where violence is intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or influence government policy through fear. While officials have not provided specific details linking the suspect’s actions to such motives, the seriousness and scale of the attack have prompted the consideration of those charges.
The stabbing has shaken the Traverse City community, a popular destination in northern Michigan known for its quiet atmosphere and small-town feel. Local officials have praised first responders for their quick actions, which they say helped prevent further injuries.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage from inside the Walmart. Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen the attack or has additional information to come forward.
As the investigation continues, residents are left searching for answers. Officials say more details, including the identity of the suspect and possible charges, will be released in the coming days.
