Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has passed away after spending nearly 20 years in a coma. His death was confirmed on Saturday, July 19, by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal.
Prince Al-Waleed was just 15 years old when he suffered a devastating car accident in London in 2005 while studying as a military cadet. The crash left him with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding, which resulted in a coma that lasted for two decades.
On April 18, 2025, he turned 36—marking nearly 20 years since he fell into an unresponsive state. Despite his condition, his family remained hopeful, sharing videos over the years that appeared to show him reacting slightly to Quran recitations. These moments inspired hope among many in the Kingdom and drew widespread sympathy and prayers from the public.
Throughout his long illness, his father, Prince Khaled, refused to remove him from life support, believing firmly in the possibility of divine healing. His unwavering dedication to his son’s care became a symbol of faith and resilience for many Saudis.
Prince Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, a well-known member of the Saudi royal family and nephew to billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. The family's openness about his condition over the years made Prince Al-Waleed a deeply recognized and loved figure in the Kingdom.
His funeral is set to take place on Sunday, July 20, following Asr prayers at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. News of his death has touched many across Saudi Arabia, marking the end of a long emotional chapter that highlighted the strength of familial love and public compassion.
The story of the Sleeping Prince captured the hearts of millions, and his passing has been met with sorrow and remembrance throughout the region.
