Justin Timberlake has opened up for the first time about being diagnosed with Lyme disease, a serious illness caused by tick bites.
The singer shared the news in an emotional Instagram post on Thursday, shortly after completing a two-year world tour. He said he decided to speak out now to raise awareness and shed light on what he has quietly been dealing with.
Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia bacteria and can lead to a wide range of symptoms including nerve pain, extreme fatigue, joint stiffness, and even problems with the heart and nervous system. Timberlake described the illness as “relentlessly debilitating,” noting how it has affected him both physically and mentally.
Reflecting on the highs and lows of his tour, Timberlake explained, “This has been the most fun, emotional, gratifying, physically demanding, and, at times, grueling experience.” He expressed deep gratitude for his fans, his support team, and his family, saying he could not have managed the tour without them.
Although he tends to keep his private life out of the spotlight, Timberlake said he felt compelled to speak about his health issues. He hoped his story might connect with others living with similar struggles and reduce stigma around chronic illnesses.
“When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure,” he wrote. “But at least I could understand why I was onstage in massive nerve pain or feeling crazy fatigue.”
Faced with a difficult choice—whether to stop touring or continue despite the pain—Timberlake chose to keep going. “The joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling,” he said.
By speaking openly, Timberlake said he hopes to encourage more understanding and support for those battling chronic health conditions. “Sharing all of this with the hope that we can all find a way to be more connected,” he wrote. “I’d like to do my part to help others experiencing this disease too.”
His message was met with overwhelming support from fans, many praising his strength and honesty.
