David Letterman Criticizes CBS Over Colbert and Show’s Cancellation

David Letterman has spoken out against CBS after the network announced it would cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May 2026, calling the decision disappointing and financially motivated.

In a video uploaded to his personal channel, Letterman expressed frustration just days after CBS revealed it would end The Late Show, which he originally hosted from 1993 until his retirement in 2015. CBS said the cancellation was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” sparking reactions from both fans and industry insiders.

Letterman, a long-standing figure in late-night television, did not hold back in his criticism of the network. He appeared visibly disheartened by CBS’s reasoning, saying the decision lacked respect for the legacy of the show and the effort that current host Stephen Colbert has put in over the years. He highlighted how Colbert brought intelligence, humor, and substance to the program, making it one of the most respected shows in the genre.

While CBS emphasized economic factors, Letterman questioned the network’s long-term strategy for late-night programming. He suggested that canceling a show with strong cultural impact sends the wrong message to viewers and creators alike.

The Late Show has been a staple of American television since 1993, with Letterman steering it for over two decades before passing the torch to Colbert. Under Colbert’s leadership, the show evolved to reflect the changing political and media landscape, often becoming a platform for sharp commentary and major interviews.

CBS’s decision comes at a time when traditional late-night programs face increasing pressure from streaming platforms, shifting audience habits, and declining ad revenue. The network described the cancellation as part of a broader financial adjustment but has not announced what will replace the program.

Letterman’s response reflects broader concerns about the future of late-night television and the value networks place on creative programming. As one of the most iconic figures in the history of late night, his criticism carries weight—and for many fans, his reaction captures the disappointment felt across the industry
