A police officer has been interdicted after a pregnant woman lost her unborn baby while being held at Rwanyambo Police Post in Nyandarua County. The incident has sparked public concern and prompted a formal investigation by both the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
In a statement released on Thursday, the National Police Service (NPS) expressed regret over the incident, confirming that an investigation is now underway to determine what happened. The NPS said the officer in charge of the police post has been suspended with immediate effect to allow for a swift and transparent inquiry.
“The National Police Service (NPS) is deeply saddened to inform the public of an unfortunate incident in which a woman miscarried while in police custody at Rwanyambo Police Post, Nyandarua County,” the statement read.
According to the NPS, the probe will focus on the circumstances that led to the woman’s miscarriage and whether any misconduct or negligence by police officers contributed to the tragedy. The service emphasized that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and respecting the freedoms of all citizens.
The woman had reportedly been arrested after her employer accused her of losing Ksh18,000 from sales. Her family says they pleaded with the police to release her as they attempted to raise the money, but their appeals were ignored.
“I pleaded with the police to release my sister as we tried to raise the money on Wednesday, but they declined. I pleaded with them, informing them that my sister had other children waiting at home and we had a sick mother to take care of, but they refused,” her sister said.
This incident comes just days after another high-profile case involving the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody at Central Police Station. Several officers, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), were interdicted following that case.
These back-to-back incidents have intensified scrutiny on the conduct of police officers and how detainees are treated while in custody. The outcome of the ongoing investigations is expected to shape future disciplinary action and possible reforms within the service.
