Sudan’s military government has accused Libyan forces loyal to commander Khalifa Haftar of supporting a deadly border attack, claiming the Libyan faction directly aided the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in an assault near the intersection of Sudan, Libya, and Egypt.
In statements released by both the Sudanese army and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, officials alleged that Libyan forces under Haftar’s eastern command were involved in a coordinated attack aimed at capturing strategic territory. The Sudanese army claimed the RSF, with support from these Libyan forces, launched an attack on Sudanese positions near Mount Arkenu. The area lies within the sensitive tri-border region, and Sudan considers the incident a serious breach of sovereignty.
According to a report by the Sudan Tribune, the Sudanese military described the involvement of Haftar’s forces as an “unprecedented” violation of international law. The Foreign Ministry went further, calling it a “dangerous escalation” and accusing Libya of being backed by unnamed foreign actors to fuel conflict in Sudan. So far, Libya has not officially responded to the accusations.
The tension follows a June 6 incident where fighters from Haftar’s “Subul al-Salam” battalion reportedly advanced three kilometres into Sudanese territory. A pro-army militia engaged the Libyan force, resulting in the deaths of two Libyan fighters and the capture of two others. A second attack from another unit based in Kufra, Libya, occurred soon after, leading to additional casualties on the Sudanese side.
Sudanese army officials said the joint RSF-Haftar mission was intended to seize control of the area. At the same time, RSF-linked media circulated videos online that they claim show RSF fighters overtaking a Sudanese army base in the same region.
The conflict between the RSF and the Sudan Armed Forces has been ongoing since 2023, when the army overthrew Sudan’s transitional government. Since the fall of long-time leader Omar al-Bashir, the country has struggled with instability and competing military factions vying for control.
Sudan’s government has vowed to defend its borders and sovereignty amid what it calls an international and regional conspiracy.
