Twenty people have died while in police custody in the last four months, raising serious concerns about police conduct.
This revelation came from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which monitors police accountability in Kenya. IPOA chairperson Anne Makori shared the information with lawmakers, stating that the cases were being investigated to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. According to IPOA, the deaths raise troubling questions about how detainees are treated while in custody.
One of the cases under investigation is that of Fredrick Ojwang, whose death has drawn public attention. While police initially claimed that Ojwang died after hitting his head against a cell wall, IPOA’s preliminary findings paint a different picture. According to IPOA, Ojwang was tortured and killed while in police custody, contradicting the official police account. These findings suggest the possibility of serious misconduct and abuse of power by officers involved in his detention.
The authority has not yet released detailed findings for all 20 deaths but has promised thorough investigations into each case. IPOA has emphasized the need for police officers to be held accountable where wrongdoing is found. The agency has also called for better oversight and reforms to prevent further loss of life in custody.
Lawmakers have expressed concern over the rising number of custodial deaths, urging swift action from oversight bodies and law enforcement agencies. They called for greater transparency and regular updates on the progress of investigations to restore public confidence in the police service.
The revelations come amid growing scrutiny of police practices in the country, with human rights groups repeatedly raising alarms about brutality, torture, and deaths in custody. IPOA’s role remains central in addressing these concerns and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
As investigations continue, IPOA has pledged to ensure that any officer found responsible for unlawful actions will face the full force of the law. The authority is expected to provide a full report once all inquiries are complete. The issue of custodial deaths highlights the urgent need for police reforms and stronger protections for individuals in detention.
