Colwill Goal Sends Chelsea to Champions League, Forest Settle for Conference

Levi Colwill’s second-half goal gave Chelsea a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, securing a fourth-place Premier League finish and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The win confirmed Chelsea’s return to Europe’s elite competition and gave manager Enzo Maresca the clarity he needed to begin summer transfer planning. Maresca had earlier said their recruitment strategy depended on Champions League qualification. The result also gave the team a boost ahead of their UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis on Wednesday in Poland.

Despite the loss, Nottingham Forest still qualified for the UEFA Conference League. It marks a successful season for the club, which returned to the Premier League just three years ago. However, there was disappointment as Forest had spent much of the season pushing for a top-four finish. A poor run of form, with only two wins in their final eight games, saw them drop to seventh place.

The match itself was tightly contested. In the first half, both teams had chances to break the deadlock. Pedro Neto and Chris Wood failed to convert for Forest before Colwill finally put Chelsea ahead five minutes into the second half with a close-range finish.

Forest had opportunities to respond, especially in the dying minutes, but struggled to find the finishing touch. Chris Wood, in particular, sent a shot over the bar in stoppage time, summing up the team’s frustrating end to the season. The defeat extended Forest’s winless streak at home to four games.

For Chelsea, the result capped off a strong finish to the season under Maresca, as the club now looks ahead to competing at the top level in Europe once again. For Forest, although they missed out on the Champions League, their qualification for the Conference League is still a major achievement compared to last season, when they narrowly escaped relegation on the final day.

The final standings confirm Chelsea’s return to Europe’s top table, while Forest will have another shot at European football next season, albeit on a different stage.
