Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery on a serious abdominal injury. The injury happened during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground, where Awoniyi collided with the goalpost late in the match.
In the 88th minute, Awoniyi tried to meet a cross from Anthony Elanga but crashed into the post in the process. Despite receiving medical attention on the pitch, he continued playing but was clearly struggling after the match resumed. The severity of his injury only became fully apparent after the game.
On Monday night, Awoniyi underwent the first phase of surgery and remains in hospital. The rest of the procedure is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday. Nottingham Forest confirmed his condition in a statement on Tuesday, reassuring fans that Awoniyi is recovering well so far.
The club emphasized that such injuries are a stark reminder of the physical dangers players face in football. Forest stated that player health and safety are their top priorities, a belief deeply held by club owner Evangelos Marinakis.
In their statement, the club said:
“The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first. At Nottingham Forest, this principle is not just policy for us; it is the deeply held belief and conviction of our owner. To Evangelos Marinakis, this isn’t just a football club — it’s family, and he instils that message in all of us.”
Forest also stressed the importance of focusing on the well-being of players and staff above media narratives or outside opinions. They called for unity in such difficult moments, highlighting that real leadership means supporting those who risk their bodies and minds for the game each week.
The club concluded by reaffirming their commitment to protecting their players’ health and recovery, regardless of external pressures. Awoniyi remains under close medical supervision, with his recovery being carefully managed.
