Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency abdominal surgery after an injury in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the City Ground, following a collision with a goalpost.
The Nigerian forward was hurt while trying to score from a cross by teammate Anthony Elanga. Despite being visibly in pain and receiving treatment on the field, Awoniyi managed to continue playing briefly. However, the seriousness of his condition was only confirmed on Monday, leading to immediate surgery. The operation was successful, and the injury is not considered life-threatening.
The incident sparked strong emotions, especially from Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis. After the match ended, Marinakis stormed onto the pitch and confronted head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Reports suggest Marinakis was angry about the decision to keep Awoniyi on the field despite his clear discomfort and the medical attention he received during stoppage time. The owner demanded answers on why the player wasn’t substituted earlier.
This injury comes at a critical time for Nottingham Forest. The club’s ambitions of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League suffered a major blow with the draw against Leicester. Forest are currently seventh in the Premier League table, trailing the top five by just one point. With only two matches left to play — against West Ham and fellow European hopefuls Chelsea — Forest’s chances of securing a Champions League spot now depend on other teams dropping points.
Despite this setback, Nottingham Forest has already secured a place in the UEFA Conference League. This achievement marks the club’s first appearance in European competition since the 1995–96 season, giving fans something to celebrate after nearly three decades away from continental football.
While Awoniyi’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, the club will be hoping for his swift return as they push for a strong finish to the season. His absence could significantly impact Forest’s attacking options in these final crucial matches.
