Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, booked a place in the Singapore Sevens Cup semifinals after a hard-fought win over France on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
This marks Shujaa’s first appearance in the semifinal stage since returning to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for the 2024/25 season. They will face Spain in the semifinal clash scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 9:34 AM East Africa Time at the Singapore National Stadium.
Shujaa topped Pool B after securing two strong wins—first against Ireland and then against France. The Kenyan side began their campaign with a convincing 17-7 victory over Ireland in the opening match.
Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring just two minutes in, converting his own try to give Kenya an early 7-0 lead. Kevin Wekesa added a second try in the sixth minute, stretching the lead to 12-0 by halftime. In the second half, Patrick Odongo scored in the 12th minute, extending the lead to 17-0. Although Ireland managed a late try through Josh Costello, Kenya held firm to claim a 17-7 win.
In their next pool game, Shujaa faced Olympic gold medalists France in a tense and closely contested match. Vincent Onyala scored in the third minute to give Kenya the lead, and Amaitsa’s conversion ensured a 7-0 advantage at halftime.
France came back strongly in the second half. Quere Kabaka scored a try and Enahemo Artaud converted it, leveling the match at 7-7. But with just minutes left, Kenya was awarded a penalty 40 meters from the posts. Amaitsa stepped up under pressure and calmly slotted the kick, giving Shujaa a narrow but crucial 10-7 victory.
The win not only secured top spot in their pool but also confirmed their place in the Cup semifinals. Shujaa now prepares to face Spain, hoping to carry their momentum forward and earn a place in the final.
