The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has removed Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu from her position, citing repeated involvement in partisan political activity that violated her oath of office and legal responsibilities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the commission said Nyutu’s actions had become “untenable” and went against the principles of impartiality expected from NCIC leadership. The decision was reached unanimously during a Special Commission Meeting held on the same day.
NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia explained that Nyutu had continuously engaged in political activities despite several warnings. He said her conduct was in “breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all commissioners” and compromised the integrity of the Commission.
The concerns around Nyutu began earlier in the year when the NCIC convened three separate meetings—on January 3, January 23, and February 6—to address her public political remarks and affiliations. Though she initially denied the allegations, she later apologized and promised to refrain from further political involvement. However, the Commission now says she broke that commitment.
The NCIC expressed “deep concern” over her continued involvement in politically affiliated meetings. In one instance, Nyutu was seen publicly praising former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a church service in May 2025, calling him “one of the best leaders in the country.” She had also held a formal meeting with Gachagua at his residence in November 2024 and was referred to as a “daughter of the mountain.” Nyutu has also been a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration.
As a result, the Commission has initiated formal proceedings to remove her completely as a commissioner, using Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) and other constitutional provisions. The decision will be forwarded to the appointing authority for further action.
In a swift leadership transition, Dorcas Kedogo has been unanimously elected as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately. The NCIC also clarified that any political comments previously made by Nyutu were her personal views and not representative of the Commission.
This move, the NCIC said, reinforces its dedication to impartiality, professionalism, and the promotion of national unity.
