Nigeria’s Former President Buhari to Be Buried on Tuesday

Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest on Tuesday, according to an official announcement. Buhari, who once ruled the country as a military leader in the 1980s, later returned to democratic politics and made history in 2015 by becoming the first Nigerian to defeat a sitting president through the ballot box.

After his landmark victory in 2015, Buhari was re-elected for a second term in 2019. His time in office was marked by efforts to tackle corruption, strengthen the military, and stabilize the country’s economy. While his leadership drew both support and criticism, his impact on Nigeria’s political landscape remains significant.

Before his democratic return, Buhari initially came to power in 1983 after leading a military coup. His time as a military ruler was known for its strict approach to governance and anti-corruption campaigns. However, his government was later overthrown in another coup in 1985.

Despite years in political exile, Buhari remained a powerful figure in Nigeria’s public life. He made several unsuccessful attempts to win the presidency through elections before finally succeeding in 2015. His victory was widely seen as a turning point in Nigeria’s democracy.

Buhari’s presidency focused on combating Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, improving infrastructure, and fighting government corruption. His administration also faced challenges, including economic downturns, rising inflation, and widespread insecurity in various parts of the country.

While in office, Buhari maintained a strong presence in regional and international affairs, often representing Nigeria at key global forums. His leadership style was sometimes described as reserved and firm, with critics pointing to his slow response to national crises, while supporters praised his discipline and anti-corruption stance.

The announcement of Buhari’s burial has prompted a wave of public reactions, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, citizens, and international allies. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to reflect on his legacy and the role he played in shaping the country’s modern political journey.

Buhari’s funeral on Tuesday is expected to draw large attendance, including dignitaries from across Africa and beyond.
