IEBC Denies Claims of Mass Voter Registration in North Eastern

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has denied reports that it plans to register 3.5 million voters in Kenya’s North Eastern region. The clarification comes after a viral post circulated online claiming the commission was preparing for large-scale voter registration in the area.

In a statement shared on social media on Monday, July 14, the IEBC described the post as fake and misleading. The false message alleged that IEBC Chairperson Erustus Edung had announced plans to register millions of voters in North Eastern following recent changes to immigration laws that had previously made voter registration in the region difficult.

The commission also flagged a separate false claim earlier this month. On July 5, another post suggested that the IEBC was planning to delete at least two million voters from its register, with the intention of targeting specific regions in Mt Kenya. The fake report claimed this was part of a move to clean out “ghost voters” ahead of the next elections.

The IEBC has condemned these reports, describing them as baseless and dangerous. On July 13, the commission issued a strong statement warning against reckless claims of voter rigging and electoral malpractice. It said such statements are harmful and undermine the public's trust in the country's democratic processes.

“The Commission is concerned about statements on election malpractices in the country,” IEBC said. “Such utterances are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society such as ours, and IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them.”

The commission emphasized that Kenya is not currently in an election period and that talk of rigging or election campaigns at this stage is not only premature but also misleading. It called on politicians and other public figures to avoid making inflammatory remarks that could weaken public confidence in the electoral system.

Instead, the IEBC encouraged all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral processes. The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the fair administration of elections when the time comes.
