Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced concern over being sidelined by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the same party he once led to national leadership. He shared his frustrations during a courtesy visit by presidential hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, expressing confusion and disappointment over his current role—or lack thereof—within the party's decision-making process.
Kufuor, a founding member of the NPP and Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009, said he felt excluded from key conversations and decisions that shape the party’s direction. His remarks reflect broader concerns about the recognition and involvement of elder statesmen in Ghanaian politics.
“Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No—I haven’t reached that stage yet. My mind and memory are intact,” Kufuor stated, underlining his continued mental sharpness and ability to contribute meaningfully to the party.
He went on to reflect on his long journey in politics, including becoming a Member of Parliament at the age of 30, co-founding the Progress Party, and serving as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs under Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia. Kufuor also recalled the difficulties he faced after Busia’s government was overthrown, including being imprisoned for several months in 1972.
Despite those challenges, Kufuor said he remained committed to building the NPP, culminating in his successful leadership that brought the party back to power in 2000. “We built this party until gradually in 2000, when I led it back to power—for eight solid years,” he said with pride.
However, the former president said he is now left feeling ignored and uncertain about his standing in the party. “But now I’m being sidelined? Ignored? It’s sad and I don’t understand,” he remarked.
His words raise important questions about whether the NPP still values the contributions of its founding members as it prepares for future leadership transitions. The emotional remarks also highlight the need for greater unity and inclusivity within the party’s internal structure as it charts its next path forward.
