Nollywood Mourns: Actor Abayomi Olabiyi Dies After Illness in Ibadan

Veteran Nigerian actor, Abayomi Olabiyi, has passed away in Ibadan, Oyo State, after battling an illness. His death was announced on Wednesday, marking another loss for the Nollywood film industry in 2024. Olabiyi was a well-known figure in the Yoruba movie scene and had built a respected reputation both as an actor and as a key figure within the industry.

Olabiyi’s death adds to the growing list of Nollywood actors who have passed away this year, including Adejumoke Aderounmu, Quadri Oyebamiji, John Okafor, Junior Pope Odonwodo, and Amechi Muonagor. His passing is being felt deeply within the community, especially by the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), where he served as the national secretary until his death.

Olabiyi first gained public recognition through his performance in the 1996 Yoruba movie Olaniyanu, a role that catapulted him into the spotlight. Over the years, he continued to captivate audiences with memorable roles in films such as Asife, Adarugudu, Aye Jobele, Ago Kan Oru, and Alfa. His contributions to the Nigerian film industry, particularly in Yoruba-language cinema, left a lasting impact on audiences and colleagues alike.

Bose Akinola, aide to the Oyo State TAMPAN Governor, confirmed the news in a public statement. "I have a directive from the Oyo State TAMPAN Governor, Her Excellency Yeye Bose Akinola, to announce the death of our TAMPAN National General Secretary, Chief Alhaji Musadshir Ayobami Olabiyi ‘Bobo B.’ May God give his family and the entire TAMPAN members globally the fortitude to bear the loss. Insha Allah, Amen," the statement read.

In addition to his national role, Olabiyi also previously served as the Oyo State Governor of TAMPAN, further cementing his influence within the organization. His death marks the end of a significant chapter for the Nollywood community, and he is remembered for his dedication to the arts and his leadership within TAMPAN.

As the industry mourns his loss, tributes are expected to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, honoring his legacy and the profound impact he had on Nollywood and Yoruba cinema.
