George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76. According to a statement from a family representative shared with Fox News Digital, the actor passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning.
Wendt was a central figure on Cheers, appearing in all 275 episodes during the show’s 11-year run from 1982 to 1993. His performance as the lovable bar regular Norm earned him six consecutive Emmy Award nominations, making him one of the show’s most recognized and cherished stars.
In a heartfelt statement, Wendt’s family described him as a devoted husband and father, as well as a trusted friend. “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever,” the representative said. The family has also asked for privacy during this time.
After Cheers ended in 1993, Wendt briefly starred in his own sitcom, The George Wendt Show. Though the series was short-lived, Wendt continued to enjoy a steady career in television and film. His film credits include roles in Alice in Wonderland, The Little Rascals, Santa Buddies, and Airplane II: The Sequel, among others.
Cheers was set in a Boston bar and became one of NBC’s most successful sitcoms, with the tagline “where everybody knows your name” becoming a part of television history. The show was widely celebrated for its sharp writing, memorable characters, and ensemble cast.
Over its 11 seasons, Cheers received 117 Emmy Award nominations and won 28 of them. It also secured six Golden Globe wins out of 31 nominations. The show featured an evolving cast, including stars like Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, and Nicholas Colasanto. Later additions included Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Kirstie Alley, and Bebe Neuwirth.
George Wendt’s contribution to the world of entertainment, particularly through Cheers, left a lasting impression on fans and fellow actors alike. His legacy as Norm, and as a warm and genuine person off-screen, will not be forgotten.
