Police Recover 17 Stolen Goats in Marsabit Raid

A coordinated security operation in Marsabit County has led to the recovery of 17 stolen goats and the arrest of one suspect, marking a significant step in tackling livestock theft in northern Kenya. The recovery operation was carried out in the Muguri Naarok area, located about 57 kilometers south of Laisamis Police Station.

The joint mission involved officers from Laisamis Police Station, National Government Administration Officers, National Police Reservists (NPR), and local village elders. According to the National Police Service (NPS), the recovered goats were transported to Laisamis Police Station, where their rightful owner will identify them. Police further confirmed that the suspect is in custody and is set to face charges in court on Monday.

Authorities hailed the success as a strong demonstration of community-police collaboration, noting that close cooperation with residents played a central role in tracing the stolen animals. “The National Police Service commends the swift response and collaboration between officers, the local administration, the NPR, and members of the community, which led to the successful recovery and arrest,” the statement read.

Livestock theft remains one of the most persistent security challenges in Marsabit and surrounding counties, often escalating into intercommunal clashes that destabilize the region. The pastoralist economy, heavily reliant on livestock, suffers greatly from such crimes, while banditry and cattle rustling continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.

Although the government has conducted security operations and disarmament exercises in the past, the latest recovery signals renewed efforts by security agencies to adopt intelligence-led strategies and strengthen local partnerships. Authorities believe this approach could play a vital role in addressing long-standing insecurity in northern Kenya.

The police encouraged residents to remain alert and continue working closely with law enforcement. “Members of the public are encouraged to continue sharing timely information to aid in combating livestock theft,” the NPS added.

For communities in Marsabit, where violence and theft have left deep scars, the recovery of the 17 goats provides a measure of reassurance. With one suspect already in custody and investigations ongoing, the operation represents not only a victory against rural crime but also a step toward restoring confidence in security efforts.
