Cholera Outbreak in Niger Kills 12, Over 230 Hospitalised

At least 12 people have died and more than 230 others have been hospitalised following a cholera outbreak in Niger State, Nigeria. The outbreak was first reported on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) and has now spread to at least five other areas.

By Wednesday, confirmed cases had emerged in Minna, Bosso, Shiroro, Magama, Bisa, and Munya LGAs. Health officials say a total of 239 people are currently receiving treatment across various primary healthcare centres.

In response to the growing number of infections, the Niger State Government has opened an isolation centre at the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna. Authorities say additional treatment and isolation facilities are also being established in the most affected areas.

Ibrahim Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, confirmed that a multi-sectoral response team has been deployed to the affected locations. According to him, the team is working to contain the outbreak and provide medical care to those infected.

“We have established treatment and isolation centres in the affected LGAs to contain the outbreak,” Mr Dangana stated. “Aggressive sensitisation campaigns are ongoing, targeting religious organisations like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Islamic groups, and the eight emirates in the state.”

He commended Governor Mohammed Bago for acting quickly to address the health emergency. Mr Dangana also acknowledged the role of donor agencies that have stepped in to support the state's efforts.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, named Chanchaga, Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro as the worst-hit LGAs. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Health officials are urging residents in affected communities to maintain proper hygiene, boil drinking water, and report any symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea to nearby health centres immediately. Public health campaigns will continue across the state in a bid to prevent further spread of the disease.
