EFCC Arrests Two Chinese Nationals and Six Nigerians for Illegal Mining

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested eight people, including two Chinese nationals and six Nigerians, for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Ogun State. The suspects were apprehended in the Ogere area, following a sting operation carried out by EFCC operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1.

According to a statement released by the EFCC on Friday, the arrests followed credible intelligence and detailed surveillance on the suspects. The individuals arrested include Zhang Hang Lin and Gao Pei Hai, both Chinese nationals, as well as Nigerians Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu.

During the operation, EFCC operatives recovered three trucks filled with sacks containing substances believed to be ground lithium powder, as well as other unidentified solid minerals. In addition, several items were seized from the suspects, including a Toyota 4Runner SUV, mobile phones, samples of low-grade lithium, ATM cards, international passports, four LED flashlights, and various documents.

The illegal mining activities, particularly the extraction of minerals like lithium, have become a growing concern due to their environmental impact and the lack of proper regulation. The EFCC’s investigation into these activities continues, with the commission emphasizing the seriousness of the charges against the suspects.

The EFCC has made it clear that it will continue to monitor and crack down on illegal mining activities in the country, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of Nigeria's natural resources. This arrest is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to address corruption and illegal practices in various sectors, ensuring that those involved are held accountable under the law.
