The mother of television host Savannah Guthrie has been reported missing, prompting an urgent search by authorities in Arizona.

Pima County officials confirmed on Sunday that 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of the “Today Show” anchor, was reported missing earlier in the day. According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, a family member placed a 911 call around noon on Sunday to alert authorities that Guthrie could not be located. The report immediately triggered a search and rescue response by the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Nanos told reporters on Sunday evening that the situation was being treated with serious concern. “We’re here on a search and rescue mission, we hope,” he said, indicating that officers were working under the assumption that Guthrie could still be found alive.

CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV reported that Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Following the report, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued an official missing person poster as part of efforts to locate her and gather information from the public.

Authorities have not released specific details about what led to her disappearance, but Sheriff Nanos said investigators discovered what he described as “concerning circumstances” at the home. As a result, homicide detectives have also become involved in the case, even as the search continues. Nanos stressed that their involvement does not automatically mean a crime has occurred, but reflects the seriousness of the situation.

The sheriff also raised concerns about Guthrie’s health, noting that she is not in good physical condition. He said there is “grave concern” for her well-being, given her age and medical status. These factors have added urgency to the search effort.

Nanos said authorities are not ruling out foul play at this stage. However, he emphasized that the primary focus remains on finding Guthrie as quickly as possible. The search is being conducted both on the ground and from the air, with teams working across the Catalina Foothills area and surrounding locations.

Savannah Guthrie has previously appeared publicly with her mother, including on the set of the “Today” show in 2023. As the investigation continues, officials say they will provide updates as more information becomes available.
