Popular Kenyan actor Bilal Wanjau, known for his standout role in the hit television series Tahidi High, has died while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, his family and colleagues have confirmed.
According to the family spokesperson, Wanjau passed away on Thursday, December 4, after being admitted earlier in the week. He had been battling type 2 diabetes and was also fighting pneumonia, alongside complications from a leg wound that required medical attention. The family explained that he was brought to the hospital on Monday, where doctors conducted several tests over the next two days. They said treatment was set to begin before his condition deteriorated, leading to his death later that night.
News of his passing was also shared by fellow actor and close friend Sandra Dacha, who posted a heartfelt tribute on social media. In her message, she described Wanjau as a gifted performer whose contribution to the industry would be deeply missed. She noted that he died due to complications arising from diabetes and remembered him as one of the most talented creatives she had worked with. Dacha also announced that his burial would take place on Friday, December 5, at his family home in Machakos, and urged Kenyans to keep the family in their prayers.
Bilal Wanjau built a respected career as both an actor and director, appearing in some of the most recognisable local productions. Besides his role on Tahidi High, he featured in notable shows such as Sumu la Penzi, Jela 5 Star, Njoro wa Uba, and Hullabaloo Estate. His versatility and ability to bring characters to life made him a familiar face to audiences across the country.
In 2017, his talent was formally recognised when he won a Kalasha Award for Best Performance in a Comedy for his role in Jela 5 Star. The victory cemented his reputation as a strong comedic actor with a unique presence on screen.
His death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans, colleagues, and entertainment industry stakeholders, many of whom praised his dedication to the craft and the legacy he leaves behind. Wanjau’s passing marks a significant loss for Kenya’s film and television community, which continues to mourn one of its most beloved contributors.
