26 Kidnappers Arrested in Kogi as Security Forces Intensify Crackdown

Security operatives in Kogi State have arrested 26 suspected kidnappers during a joint operation targeting criminal hideouts in Kogi West. The Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), working alongside government security agencies, carried out the operation over a two-week period in areas including Odo-Ape in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area.

Kogi State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), while addressing the media on Tuesday, said the arrests are part of a broader strategy by the state government to tackle insecurity and flush out criminal elements from forests in the region.

According to Omodara, the operation did not only target armed kidnappers hiding in the forests, but also involved the arrest of local collaborators. These include residents accused of supplying logistics—such as food, water, and drinks—to the criminals.

He linked the breakthrough to investigations following the kidnapping and death of retired Major Joe Ajayi, who died in captivity on June 9, despite his family paying a ₦10 million ransom. Omodara stressed that those arrested are helping security agencies trace the root causes of the rising wave of abductions.

“These are the people causing havoc in our forests. We won’t allow them to operate here. Kogi is not a safe haven for bandits and kidnappers,” he declared.

Omodara also warned politicians, traditional leaders, and youth found to be aiding kidnappers to stop immediately or face prosecution. He called on local communities to step up intelligence sharing and support vigilante groups, some of whom are now allowed to carry arms.

Speaking during the parade of suspects, Deputy Commandant of the Civilian JTF, Mr. Jeremiah Danjuma, said that 16 suspects were arrested in a night operation in Bunu forests. Some of them were reportedly from Zamfara State and have already been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.

The traditional ruler of Aiyegunle-Igun Bunu, Oba Sunday Omodamori, condemned recent protests in the area, claiming they were staged by individuals trying to divert attention from those aiding criminals. He praised the government’s swift response and ongoing support to local security efforts.

Youth leader Ojo Olayinka clarified that the protests were not organized by his community, and commended the government for its role in reducing crime in the area.
