Valverde’s Late Strike Keeps Real Madrid in Title Race

Real Madrid kept their hopes of defending the La Liga title alive with a dramatic 1-0 win over Athletic Club on Sunday night. The match appeared headed for a goalless draw until Federico Valverde scored in stoppage time to secure three crucial points.

The goal came in the 93rd minute and was enough to keep Carlo Ancelotti’s side within reach of league leaders Barcelona. With the victory, Madrid remains four points behind their rivals, maintaining pressure as the title race heads into the final stretch.

The match was a tough test for Madrid, especially coming just days after their Champions League elimination at the hands of Arsenal. The disappointment from that loss seemed to hang over the team, as they struggled to break down a rotated Athletic Club side.

Athletic, fresh off a Europa League win over Rangers on Thursday, made several changes to their starting eleven but still managed to frustrate the defending champions for most of the game. Madrid’s attacking efforts were repeatedly met with resistance, and chances were few and far between.

Vinicius Junior thought he had given Madrid the lead when he found the net, but the goal was disallowed due to Endrick being offside in the build-up. That setback only added to Madrid’s frustration, as they searched desperately for a breakthrough.

Jude Bellingham was also at the center of the action. He appealed for a penalty after a soft collision in the box, but the referee waved play on. Later in the match, Bellingham had a golden chance to score but blasted the ball over the bar from close range.

Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Valverde stepped up with a moment of brilliance. His powerful, swerving strike flew into the top corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance and sending the home crowd into celebration.

The win gives Madrid a much-needed boost as they continue their pursuit of the La Liga crown. With only a few games left in the season, every point is vital, and Valverde’s late goal could prove crucial in the title race.
