Israeli Airstrike Kills 29 in Gaza City, Raising Death Toll to 38

An Israeli airstrike on a house in Gaza City killed at least 29 Palestinians, including children, according to local health authorities. The attack targeted a multi-floor residential building in the Shejaia neighborhood, a heavily populated area in the eastern part of Gaza City. Medics reported that dozens more people were wounded in the strike, and many are still believed to be trapped under the rubble. The explosion also damaged nearby homes, worsening the devastation.

The Israeli military claimed the airstrike targeted a senior Hamas militant responsible for organizing attacks from the Shejaia area. While the identity of the individual was not revealed, the military said it had taken several precautions to minimize civilian casualties. However, local health authorities reported that in addition to the 29 deaths in the airstrike, another nine Palestinians were killed in separate Israeli military actions across Gaza, bringing the death toll for the day to 38.

The attack comes after Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza on March 18, following a two-month ceasefire. Since then, Israeli strikes have killed nearly 1,500 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. The ongoing bombardment and ground operations have left many Gaza residents in fear of further escalation. Israel has ordered evacuations from areas around Gaza to create a security zone, but there are concerns that the move could lead to the permanent displacement of Palestinians from these areas.

In response, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have resumed firing rockets into Israel. The conflict, which escalated in October 2023 following a deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel, has led to a continuing stalemate in ceasefire talks. Mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have made efforts to restore peace but have so far been unable to find a solution to the ongoing violence.

The situation remains dire as both sides continue to exchange blame for the failure of ceasefire negotiations.
