East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Falhada Dekow Iman has been suspended from Parliament for 90 days following a heated physical altercation with nominated ODM MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed.
The decision was announced by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who stated that Falhada would not be allowed to access the precincts, buildings, or any other parliamentary facilities during the suspension period. However, she will be permitted to appear on one specific day to deliver a written explanation to the Speaker.
“Honorable Falhada is excluded from accessing the precincts of Parliament, Parliament buildings and facilities for 90 days, save for the day and time when she will deliver her written explanation to the Speaker,” Wetang’ula said.
Despite the apology issued by Falhada, the Speaker went ahead with the disciplinary action. In her statement shared on her official X account, the lawmaker took full responsibility for the incident, explaining that it happened in the heat of the moment after what she described as prolonged provocation.
“To the Kenyan Parliament fraternity and the public, I feel compelled to address the regrettable incident that occurred within the corridor of Parliament, involving myself and Nominated MP Hon. Ummul Kheir,” she said. “What transpired was undeniably beneath the dignity of the institution we serve, and the trust bestowed upon us by the Kenyan people. For this, I offer my unreserved apologies.”
She admitted that her actions went against the expected standards of behavior for a public servant and said no provocation could justify what happened.
“To the public who witnessed this unsettling spectacle via social media, I apologize for failing to exemplify the composure and maturity you rightfully expect from your representatives,” she added.
Falhada also promised to learn from the incident, stating she would reflect and recommit herself to professionalism and civility.
Nominated MP Harun, who was involved in the clash, said Falhada had deliberately come to Parliament to confront her. She expressed regret over the incident and emphasized that she does not condone any form of misconduct.
“I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasise that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct,” Harun said.
