Babu Owino Fires Back at Museveni, Defends His Support for Democracy and Youth Leadership

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has responded to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's accusations of meddling in Uganda's politics, emphasizing his commitment to democracy and the needs of the youth in both Kenya and Uganda. Taking to X shortly after Museveni's remarks, Owino dismissed the Ugandan President's comments and reiterated his stance as a leader advocating for better opportunities for young people.

Owino recounted his humble beginnings, highlighting his deep understanding of poverty and the struggles faced by the underprivileged. "I thank President Museveni for supporting Baba’s bid for AUC Chairmanship. However, as a young leader in Kenya, having grown up in poverty, I know what it means to lack," Owino stated, stressing his empathy for those in need.

Drawing parallels between the economic situations in Kenya and Uganda, Owino argued that both nations require visionary leaders who can address the challenges faced by their youth. He criticized Museveni's long-standing leadership, advocating for democratic rights and "alternative visions of leadership" that could uplift Africans from oppression and poverty.

"As Babu Owino, I stand for a democratic society where a child in Kenya will receive proper medication, and education and will equally get a job. Equally, a child in Uganda should receive the same treatment as a child in Kenya," he asserted, calling for equal opportunities across the region.

Museveni, during his endorsement of Raila Odinga's African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson bid at State House Nairobi, accused Owino of collaborating with Uganda's opposition, stating that intelligence reports had linked Owino to anti-NRM activities. "There is a character called Babu. I always see Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups. I have never accused him, but now I am accusing him," Museveni said.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna also criticized Museveni's public reprimand of Owino, arguing that any grievances should have been addressed through diplomatic channels. "To use a Presidential Podium to make such grave accusations against a Kenyan is a NO!" Sifuna stated, defending Owino and condemning the manner of Museveni's remarks.
